Andrea Bianchi – Malabimba (1979)

Quote:
This movie works for two reasons. The first is the director Andreas Bianchi who, though far less prolific, was a lot like Spanish auteur Jesus Franco in his ability to take irredeemably sleazy material like this and make it somehow oddly watchable. Bianchi’s work includes “What the Peeper Saw” which offered the unusual pairing of Swedish sex kitten Britt Ekland and the kid from “Oliver”, scuzzy giallo favorite “Strip Nude for Your Killer” where the usually classy Edwige Fenech simulated both oral and anal sex (not surprisingly, it’s the only recent DVD release she hasn’t provided any commentary for), and his follow-up to this film “Burial Ground” again with Giordano who this time gets her latex nipple bitten off by a strange-looking dwarf who is supposed to be her zombified son. Which brings me to the second reason:the infamous Mariangela Giordano. Although she is sometimes labeled a “scream queen” this label doesn’t really fit Giordano as she was an actress for twenty-five years in Italian genre films before she ever started doing nude sex scenes in sleazy horror movies like this in her early 40’s (during her marriage to producer Crisanti). She proved so good at it though that even years later when she appeared in Michael Soavi’s “The Sect” she has a scene as the world’s sexiest 53-year-old naked corpse! But besides having a virtually un-aging body, she was a pretty decent actress. It is a testament to her thespian abilities that this sultana of sleaze is even remotely believable as a nun. (And if her initial seduction by the possessed teenager seems amazing just wait around for the “exorcism”).

L’Homme noir is the first fantastic film directed by Alfred Machin in his studio in Nice, after a series of comedies, dramas and satires which met with great success, in particular thanks to the presence on the screen of the animals which have surrounded since his two stays in Africa in 1908 and 1910. Thus, we find, after L’Énigme du Mont-Agel (1924) and Les Héritiers de uncle James(1924), Auguste the chimpanzee which this time takes on a disturbing role. In the village of Gattières, twenty kilometers north of Nice, he finds austere façades, narrow and winding streets which allow him to create a strange atmosphere, reinforced by the use of artificial lighting, innovative at the time. . Romuald Joubé, draped in a large cape, under a large black hat, camps a romantic character with a worried soul. Add a mansion standing out against a tortured sky which is accessed by crossing an abandoned cemetery, distorted interior decorations captured through unusual perspectives and you are, not in a German expressionist film, but in an innovative French work. Too much, certainly, for the critics and the public of the time, who weren’t expecting to meet Alfred Machin on this strange and fantastic terrain little surveyed by French directors. The film also struggled to find a distributor. It was in 1927, almost three years after its realization, that Universal, an American company which then watered the popular theaters of action films andserials , releases the film renamed The Manor of Fear. Skillful creator of atmospheres, Alfred Machin also knows how to stage spectacular sequences like that of the accident of a train on a viaduct which precipitates him at the bottom of a ravine in the explosion of the boiler of the locomotive. Shot at night, this episode certainly owes a lot to the memories of the director, who was one of the witnesses of the Saujon disaster in 1910. That evening, Machin takes place in Bordeaux on the train which must take him back to Paris, and derailed. Unharmed, Machin rescues the many injured until the arrival of the rescuers. He then grabs his camera and turns. This made a good sequence for the Pathé-Journal, of which he was then one of the operators. And, some fifteen years later, an anthology scene in one of the first French fantasy films,

The “Tall Man” and his strange little Killer Sphere return for a second round in this sequel to the 1979 cult favorite. Mike Pearson (James LeGros) is still plagued by memories of the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), an evil mortician who has risen from the grave and bleeds embalming fluid — and tried to kill him as a boy. Mike has been a patient in a mental institution for the last decade, insisting that the Tall Man is real; he still appears in his dreams ten years after their first encounter. When Mike changes his tune and says that the undead undertaker was merely a hallucination, he is finally released. However, Mike and his best friend, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), are actually out to find the Tall Man and put an end to his habits of grave-robbing and draining people’s bodies with his flying brain-juicer. As they search for the Tall Man, Mike encounters Liz (Paula Irvine), a woman who has also appeared in his dreams, and she claims that she too has been pursued by the Tall Man.

Tracey Moffatt – Bedevil (1993)

BEDEVIL is the stunning debut feature from Tracey Moffatt (NIGHT CRIES, NICE COLORED GIRLS) and the first feature directed by an Australian Aboriginal woman. Inspired by ghost stories she heard as a child from both her extended Aboriginal and Irish Australian families, Tracey Moffatt has constructed a sublime trilogy in which characters are haunted by the past and bewitched by memories. All three stories are set in Moffatt’s highly stylized, hyper-real, hyper-imaginary Australian landscape. In the first story MISTER CHUCK, a young boy is fascinated and terrified by a swamp that is haunted by the ghost of an American GI. CHOO CHOO CHOO CHOO finds a family living by railroad tracks haunted by strange happenings. The mother (played by Moffatt) is drawn to the tracks at night as she senses the horror of a past tragedy. The final story, LOVIN’ THE SPIN I’M IN, follows a woman who resists eviction attempts by her landlord so she can keep vigil for her dead son.

Stanley Kubrick – The Shining [International Cut] (1980)

As some of you are aware, Stanley Kubrick personally re-edited The Shining after the initial US release, shortening it some 20 minutes. The original version, clocked at 144 min is only available in the US (and is available here on worldscinema) but everywhere else, there is this 119 min version, which according to some sources, was Kubrick’s preferred version.

Personally I prefer the longer version, but it’s uncanny how organic this cut is, since you don’t feel like you’re watching a shortened version at all.

This rip is made from the Special Edition 16:9 DVD, with the commentary track on second track – the commentary is shortened too!

Takashi Miike – Gokudô kyôfu dai-gekijô: Gozu aka Yakuza Horror Theater (2003)

$

Quote:
One can certainly wonder why the prolific Takashi Miike is hooked on directing such nutty films. First, lactic effusion, a recurring theme in his cinema (Visitor Q), seems to obsess him, even though that doesn’t explain everything!

Be the judge: a yakuza, at his life’s end, starts to exterminate chihuahuas, convinced that the poor animals have fomented the destruction of his fellow human beings. His paranoiac crises multiply, he becomes a threat for his Organization. His boss orders his execution and charges his most faithful friend to take care of the dirty job.

Thus begins a strange voyage outside of the city. Freud himself would have given up deciphering Gozu, a narrative crossbreed of a badly regulated Oedipal complex, self-contained homosexuality, dislike for women and particularly for parturition. The most notable scene of the film is when the yakuza, who is mysteriously changed into a superb woman, gives birth to himself, before his horrified friend who has just lost his virginity to the creature! Lars Von Trier has met his match: this horrific climax by far exceeds the traumatizing childbirth of The Kingdom.

This would probably make the most sensitive of us faint, if the laughter, contagious, wasn’t taking over all these horrors. Miike subtitled his picture “yakuzas horror movie” and admittedly he doesn’t deceive!

While it can certainly be categorized as a cult cinema, Gozu does not, however, look like an arty do-it-yourself work. Visually elaborate, the film brings us to the furthermost bounds of the fantastic and horror. Out of the city, the ghosts invest the fiction and impulses break out until paroxysm. Thus, the homoerotic relation linking the two protagonists generates a beautiful killer with a thirst for revenge. The death of the lustful Godfather, a specialist in the diversion of kitchen accessories for shameful purposes, is another great moment of the picture.

How to react vis-à-vis such delirious fiction? To agree to let oneself be grabbed by the uninterrupted flood of embarrassing scenes? To appreciate the sulfurous and schoolkid-like character of the work? Finally, to question oneself about what Gozu really is ? A splendid story of trashy love, a UFO out of the sick imagination of a resolutely cult filmmaker. And undoubtedly, one of the weirdest films this decade!

Martin Walz – Kondom des Grauens AKA Killer Condom (1996)

Quote:
A witty and inventive gross-out comedy suggesting a synthesis of John Waters and Terry Gilliam, Martin Walz’s German film adapts Ralf Konig’s graphic comic about killer contraceptives unleashed in a diabolical plot to wipe out New York’s gay population. (Actually the condoms, which eviscerate or castrate their victims, make no distinctions when it comes to sexual orientation.) Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), a gay Sicilian police detective, sets out to track down the source; in the movie’s longest running gag he’s one of the first victims, losing one of his testicles during a hotel tryst. Walz introduces some nice noir shadings (Luigi delivers the ironic voice-overs) and his camera placement is generally smart and revealing–especially in the thoroughly weird shots from the point of view of the condoms. Unfortunately, though, he can’t sustain the wonderful energy throughout the film. Killer Condom certainly isn’t for all tastes–at times it wasn’t for mine–but it’s impossible to walk away indifferent.

Yôichi Takabayashi – Honjin satsujin jiken AKA Death at an Old Mansion (1976)

Niklaus Schilling – Nachtschatten AKA Nightshade (1972)

$

This film was one of the few attempts of the “New German cinema” to produce something like a horror film. Not quite a successful attempt in my opinion since director Niklaus Schilling seems to be rather afraid of anything to do with “genre” and therefore keeps out most the atmosphere that could be achieved by exploiting Germanic mysticism as he does here. The film has an unpleasantly pretentious aura and could’ve made much more of its theme and locations. It really requires some endurance, especially during many of the redundantly chatty scenes – I actually am into slow-paced films but I felt that the dozy pace here had no particular purpose, other than giving an impression of “auteurism” and reduction for reduction’s sake. However, there are some memorable, eerie moments, a handful of pittoresque shots (watch out, they’re the ones I selected as screenshots) and Schilling’s wife Elke Haltaufderheide (who also starred in Rudolf Thome’s cult film DETEKTIVE) delivers a memorable performance as the haunted woman around whom the film evolves.

Plot-wise, the film introduces a dull music publisher who travels to a remote village in the Luneburg Heath (the German version of Dartmoor) where he intends to purchase the house of a recently deceased man. He is accomodated at the house by the wife of the deceased, a rather mysterious lady with an air of tragedy around her. At night, he is plagued by uncanny nightmares in which the woman puts flowers onto his grave, rather than her husband’s…
