Quote:
A dark old house that holds its secrets close. Two sisters tormented by an evil stepmother and clinging to one another for comfort while their aloof, ineffectual father hides in his work and tries to ignore the mounting tension in his household. The onset of puberty, the first spilling of menstrual blood, is marked by terrifying visitations. If, as A Tale of Two Sisters unfolds, you’re put in mind of a fairy tale—albeit by way of Angela Carter or Tanith Lee—you wouldn’t be wrong; the story is in part based on a Korean folk tale that’s made it to film several times before in that country. And yet this haunting retelling has an utterly original feel about it. In part this is due to a set of storytelling beats (that is, the actual timing of major scare sequences and revelations) that differ from those we’re accustomed to in Western film, lending an even more disorienting feel to the already off-kilter proceedings; largely, though, it is the combined effects of cinematographer Lee Mogae’s lush photography, Lee Byeong-Woo’s evocative score, and director Kim Jee-Woon’s ability to coax affecting and almost unbearably poignant performances from young actresses Im Soo-jung (as Su-mi) and Moon Geun-young (as her younger sister Su-yeon).

In the cemetery is a lavish crypt where head vampire Richmond Reed (John Carradine) drinks blood cocktails with Cherish and two other lovely bloodsuckers (Lenka Novak and Katie Dolan). The sailors are able to escape death when daylight approaches, but no one back at the military base believes their chance encounter with the undead. Tom later makes his way back to the crypt and gets the ultimate in satisfaction when the vampiric female trio decides to act human for one night and conduct an orgy with him as the star.

Andy Milligan – Monstrosity (1987)

Quote:
Bloodthirsty Butchers, The Ghastly Ones etc and definitely not a good starting point for the Milligan novice. However, the movie is not without its dubious and very cheesy merits. Milligan regular Hal Borske is loveably kooky as the “monstrosity” (an understatement!); the film frantically races from one absurd scenario to the next; and there’s cheap-jack gore a-plenty. The wonderfully demented gut-ripping sequence is a highlight; the matter-of-fact manner in which the villain slices his victim’s abdomen and yanks yard-upon-yard of intestines from her makes for a truly head-spinning spectacle. Special mention must also go to the infuriating siren-like title theme that sounds at every given opportunity.

Monstrosity is certainly no lost classic but those poor souls working their way through Milligan’s back catalogue may find it more entertaining than the disdainful comments in Milligan’s biography suggest.

Rosa von Praunheim – Dein Herz in meinem Hirn AKA Your Heart in My Brain (2005)

Quote:
For whatever reason, this low-budget shot-on-DV film seems to have never been released in any format and is very rare. This is a web rip and the best (and only) print of the film currently available. Inspired by the gay German cannibalism case involving Armin Meiwes (whose story inspired no less than three other films, including Martin Weisz’s Grimm Love (2006) and Marian Dora’s Cannibal (2006) and Ulli Lommel’s Diary of a Cannibal), von Praunheim’s film caused much controversy, mainly because it was partially funded by German tax money. Indeed, somewhat surprisingly, a film foundation in one of Germany’s wealthiest federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia, gave von Praunheim its blessing, and a €20,000 (£13,000) grant. The film is notable for featuring only two actors, who also play all the female characters in drag (with the lead actor also portraying his character’s mother!). Part melodramatic chamber piece and part kitschy campy psycho-horror, Dein Herz in meinem Hirn AKA Your Heart in My Brain (2005) is undoubtedly one strange little film.

Synopsis: A retelling of the events that led to the death of Bernd Juergen Brandes. Brandes responded to Armin Meiwes’ Internet ad in 2001, where Meiwes indicated that he was looking for a man willing to be killed and eaten.

Herbert Wise – The Woman in Black (1989)

Quote:
With the recent passing of stalwart science fiction / horror scribe Nigel Kneale, it seems only appropriate to cover an unjustly hard-to-find title Mr. Kneale worked his unique sort of magic upon. Adapted by Kneale from Susan Hill’s 1983 novel and directed by Herbert Wise, The Woman in Black is a genuinely frightening, “old school” ghost story in the mold of tales told by M.R. James and Daphne Du Maurier.

Concerned as much with its characters’ own demons as it is with those prowling the foggy grounds surrounding Eel Marsh house, the quintessential creaky gothic home where much of the story is set, Woman deftly balances an almost unbearably tense atmosphere with fluid internal dynamics for its major players, all layered into spot-perfect ambience.

The low man on the totem pole at his accounting firm, young Arthur Kidd is charged against his will with the task of helping to inventory the home of a well-moneyed, recently deceased widow named Drablow in the isolated town of Crythin Gifford. Kidd finds himself instantly at odds with the town’s residents, a close-knit bunch who looked on the woman’s lavish home in Eel Marsh with suspicion. At the widow’s sparsely attended funeral a peculiar woman in a black dress watches from afar, taking particular note of Kidd himself. Whispers permeate about a malevolent child-murderess who once called the town home, and when Kidd saves a young child from certain death at a town market an otherworldly presence begins stalking him at Eel Marsh.

There’s nothing particularly new afoot in terms of narrative in The Woman in Black, but the precision with which the story unfolds helps render it fresh. The performances, especially that of Pauline Moran as the title phantom, are all nicely realized. There are several touches indicative of Kneale’s involvement throughout, including Drablow’s having used an early audio recording device and the house at Eel Marsh featuring electricity (a concept Kneale keenly uses to edge the film’s language toward more modern spook stories when things move from bad to worse for Kidd). The finale is exceptionally chilling, offering a dour coda revamped from the source material’s more upbeat clincher.

The Woman in Black comes to together so well on almost every level it’s a little shocking to consider how “under the radar” the film remains. From a technical standpoint there isn’t much to write home about but that’s no indictment. The cinematography is appropriate to the subject matter and does a fine job of conveying Crythin Grifford’s dinghy, working class roots, and its compositions take on nightmarishly claustrophobic proportions as the titular character invades the waking world. Make-up and practical effects garner little screen time, but again are extremely effective in context. Woman never suffers from its made for TV roots and, in terms of mise en scène, trumps many larger-scale ghost stories which have appeared in ensuing years.

The Woman in Black has seen two separate English-language releases – on VHS and DVD, both from Ontario-based BFS Entertainment, both now long out of print. Despite her misgivings about some of the ways in which her novel was reworked on its way to the small screen, Susan Hill was kind enough to respond to an email query in an effort to help clear up Woman’s home video status. Since being held by BFS, the rights to the project have been purchased twice over, and now rest with a major U.S. studio. A little digging pointed toward Universal being the current rights holder, with their mounting another filmed adaptation not outside the realm of possibility.

It’s tough to swallow that The Woman in Black, a title rightly held in very high regard by those fortunate enough to have seen it, offers no promise of a legitimate re-release in the near-term. If Uni is in fact sitting on the film’s rights in light of some as-of-yet unannounced reworking, they should know Woman is a gem many fans would gladly have in their collections, to say nothing of all those yet to experience its terrifically creepy charms. This is a title that deserves to be brought back in circulation, where it can send shivers down the collective spine of audiences both new and old. — Collin Armstrong (Screenanarchy)

Mr. Laffler (Jiří Lábus) is strange. Everyone in the office he runs knows that. At home, he says, he does not accept guests. He leads him to an inconspicuous, secluded restaurant U Sbirra, where a very closed company of strange people meet.

The restaurant itself is strange. No menus, no spices, no alcohol, no smoking. And the food? The only food served here is a thin soup and a main course of bland taste. Costain is dismayed, but does not want to offend Laffler, so he accepts another invitation. He wonders about it himself, but he starts to enjoy the unusual food and as soon as he tastes the local specialty of the chef, which is served only once in a while – Amirstan Lamb…
